De La Hoya was facing good fighters from his 3rd fight onwards.

Jimmy Young. Roy Williams in his 6th fight, Randy Neuman in his 10th fight, Earnie Shavers in his 11th fight. By his 20th fight he'd met Lyle and Shavers again.

While I agree on what Kid says here , I will like to point out that the Jim Jeffries has probably the disticntion of facing the toughest competition at the earliest. He quit after 21 fights, but by then he had fought Sharkey, Fitz,Choyonski and a host of other greats of his era. Unmatched I say.

Agreed on Jeff. I don't think anyone could top that. What's your view of the rumours that he had more fights behind closed doors which were never recorded?

                Wilfred Benitez deserves a mention.
