Imagine being Berry Gordy and going "Nah, forget it, shall we delete that track?"

Apparently there were just around 200 copies, or maybe even less - some got smuggled over to Green Teefland.
    It's excellent.

But I kinda get where Gordy was coming from - the song/production is remarkable but the vocals are just alright. Gordy heard so much talent week-in week-out that it doesn't surprise me that even hearing a great song he was like "not good enough".

You make a good point, when you're in a studio producing Levi Stubbs, anyone would sound like a daft cunt in comparison, wouldn't they?

I feel that the backing singers do a lot of the heavy lifting, don't they? Does he hit a bum note around 0'45? The "daaaarling" bit? It's the higher register bits I like of his.

        4. The Showstoppers - Ain't Nothin' But A House Party

I BELIEVE that wasn't a hit in Fat Yankistan? Some Philadelphians, two of them were brothers of Solomon Burke. They came over to London to record, and this was the result of one of their sessions. This isn't the actual record, this is a live version they did for some Green Teef TV show.
