Super middleweight Marco Romero fought in an arena for the first time as a professional on Saturday. It is the first of what he envisions to be many more fights in big venues.
Romero picked up a first-round knockout over Andre Amaro. Romero returns to his hometown of Olathe, Kansas, on September 6, and no opponent has been set as of now.
Romero, 9-0 (8 KOs), a 19-year-old, has stayed extremely busy in his first year as a professional. He has fought nine times and is now approaching the point of being an eight-round fighter.
He passed another milestone by fighting on the undercard of a Deontay Wilder pay-per-view card, which was the most high-profile fight card he had been on to date.
“It was my first time being on a card that was that big,” Romero told BoxingScene. “I went in there and did my job.”
“The only thing that was going through my mind was that one of these days I will be selling out arenas like that, hopefully selling out Arrowhead Stadium [in Kansas City],” Romero said. “Big things are coming, and if I stay on this route, it will take me there.”
Romero credits his consistency of staying in the gym and the momentous grind that is keeping him so active and successful. His opponent, Amaro, had ties to Kansas but now resides in Honolulu, Hawaii. Amaro, 2-1 (2 KOs), is a 43-year-old veteran who was unable to keep up with the young gun Romero. For Romero, he had fought 13 days prior, and he continues to stay busy.
“As a prospect, it is important to stay active to get acclimated to the pro ranks,” Romero said. “I think I am doing that. I feel good about my schedule and what is next.”
Romero is eyeing his upcoming hometown fight with hopes of big things in the future. Romero confidently stated that there will be big fights and big main events in his future.
“There is more to come,” Romero said. “This is not going to be my only time under those bright lights.”
