I don't think you fight Rocky on the back foot , Jack Hurley had a theory that you engage him on the inside where you won't be caught by his long swinging punches, that's what he instructed Mathews to do,and it worked ,for one round, then Mathews stepped back in the 2nd rd ,giving Rocky the space and leverage he wanted and he landed that terrific left hook. Tunney has a 45/55chance against Marciano ,imo.

rocky has the shortest arms of any heavyweight ever, and his only goal was getting close to his opponents, even if he took a few to do it.
so in the most polite way possible I do not think this is a good plan for any fighter
staying in close might preserve any fighter by smothering themselves and Rocky, but it wonâ€ÂÂÂ ™t give them a chance in the fight- as they have long arms and cannot hit him with anything telling
its also important to note, Matthews tried to stay in the pocket with him, realized it was a terrible idea - got on his bike like the rest and got iced. That fight was a head injury, look at Matthews in the corner afterwards. Terrible shot
I think also when we talk about matchups with Marciano, its one thing to figure styles - but it’s another to figure conditioning. If the fighter isn’t fit and strong enough - all it takes is one shot. Charles has a great style to trouble or beat Rocky - if he was in Rockys condition I bet charles would beat rocky 9/10 times.
Langford might be one of the few fighters that would make you question your bet on fight night - mostly because he has very similar attributes. Incredible strong. Iron beard. Small target. He’s also got fast hands and slickness that Rocky doesn’t quite have - at least compared to Langford.
when you look at say - guys like Ali - at first glance anyone would say Ali will use his height and speed to stay away from the shorter Marciano. There is however one factor on fight night that is hard to readily picture. Marciano fights in a crouch. Alis punch selection is jabs, straights and a snappy left hook mostly meant to open the guy up for jabs or straights. Ali has a very mediocre uppercut, a short upperbody not suited for inside fighting and long legs - great for moving. However - against a short pressure fighter - all Ali can do is back up essentially - which is incredibly hard to do for over 15 rounds - when the guy in front of you is not only bullet proof but also has legendary stamina and willpower. And lastly - the most obvious one - is many fans don’t quite understand how hard Marciano hits. They write him off for 2 reasons. He’s white, and he’s 187 lbs. however, just watch the shot that takes Louis out (who cares about age, just look at the effect). Marcianos shots are so hard they even crush your arms.Last edited by them_apples; Yesterday, 12:29 PM.
