George Foreman and Sonny Liston sparring

George Foreman said that the only fighter that could ever force him to move backwards was Sonny Liston.

This was a young George Foreman and a old Sonny Liston.

Foreman also said that Sonny Liston was the only man he ever feared. When they were done sparring and sitting beside each other talking,he said that he feared Sonny Liston.

Foreman even started to idolize Sonny Liston. And Liston was his idol during his first reign.

    Any thoughts or comments?

Foreman was green back then. He stated he was also scared of Joe Frazier going into their title bout.

In 'Champions Forever' he admitted to being scared of Ken Norton too.

Foreman was always good for dramatising up a tale. I cant imagine a 20 year old gold medalist reknowned for being a thug and a bully being genuinely scared by anyone. He may have feared Sonny's gangster connections (if there were really any of note), though I doubt it.

But in all honesty the Liston of 1968-1970 probably would have still had a little too much for young George at that point and probably did get the upper hand in sparring. Sonny was an excellent boxer with a great jab and technique, power and chin. Not too much speed......but George wasn't too blessed in that department either.

George probably just really respected Sonny, his tough guy attitude, the fact that he could take his best punches and looked up to him as an idol.

The first generation of Foreman was quite a surly character. No suprise that some of Liston rubbed off.

Mike Tyson admitted to being scared before every fight. Athletes can react oddly to the stress leading up to an event. You just never know.

I think a young guy (even someone like Foreman) would probably have been intimidated by someone like Liston. It's natural to respect someone who has 'been there and done it' and has a lot more knowledge and experience than you. When that person is also involved with organised crime and is as mean looking and as tough as Liston then a small amount of fear probably comes into it as well.

Liston just looks like a cold, mean guy. I could imagine him shooting someone dead and his expression never changing lol. Not that I'm suggesting he ever did so.

I may be wrong but I always thought the quote was that Liston was the only fighter that Foreman couldn't make take a step back.
