Why Did Bernard Hopkins Have So Much Trouble With Jermaine Taylor ?

Bernard Hopkins had a long run as the Middleweight Champion until he faced Jermaine Taylor. He lost to Jermaine Taylor in a fight where he barely threw punches in the first half of the fight (similar to Lomachenko Vs Lopez).

In the rematch, he just flat out got dominated.

What was it about Jermaine Taylor that gave Hopkins so much trouble? It can't just be an age thing because Hopkins won many big fights and world titles after that so was it just a style thing.

    Please elaborate.

Taylor was the first middleweight Hopkins ever fought that can throw a jab.

Taylors double jab took away Hopkins counter punches.

Interesting, in the 2nd fight, Taylor was barely even throwing the jab. Was Hopkins just that afraid of his power?

Yes Hopkins was just afraid. Hopkins was a front runner with a very limited skill set.

It was most likely time for Hopkins to move up in weight 'Jermaine Taylor was a capable fighter'.

For a short period of time, Spinks, Winky Wright, Kelly Pavlik twice 'Those where some great fights'.

Hopkins as he progressed in his career? Almost became too intellectual inside of the ring.

I think him being 40 had a big part to do with it. I get he was a crafty fighter, and that helped him outfox guys for his Lt heavyweight run later on, but he was old by the time he fought Taylor and no longer as good as he once was.

Taylor was a great athlete and was able to jump out to a quick lead in their first fight (though I still thought Hopkins won)

I'm glad you pointed that out...I was gonna reply the same thing, but then thought that further conversing with opinions like that might ruin my evening.
