Hi everyone, I'm a new member of the forum from the UK and would like to ask for some help choosing the correct weight of gloves for my needs.
A little background - as a massive boxing fan over the years, I've finally plucked up the courage to learn the noble art and get into shape at the same time. I've started learning the basics and am thoroughly enjoying it - to the point where I now regret starting so late.
I'm 6'4", slim build and weigh approx 190 lbs out of shape, but with little fat.
My hands and wrists are slim and long - I can touch my thumb and middle finger round my wrists - just.
Most of my work at the moment is based on the pads, learning the basic techniques which I'm slowly getting the hang of.
What I've started noticing recently since I've started to work more on hooks and upper cuts is that I'm hurting my wrists - not a dull ache later in the evening, but a pain in the joint where my thumb attaches that is tender to the touch.
I'm almost certain that this is down to poor technique - I'm still trying to work out whether it is better to hook with the palm down or thumb up?
Anyhow - when I first started I naively walked into the local generic sporting goods shop and bought the first set of 'Title' gloves I came across.
Now I know after a while that this is a sport I want to take as far as my ability will take me and learn and train properly, it is very obvious to me that these gloves are pretty useless.
I'm in the fortunate position that whilst I'm not rolling in it, budget is not my primary concern when choosing a glove.
My main motivation is choosing a glove that I can use on the pads and also the heavy bag (when the time comes) whilst offering my hands and wrists as much support and protection as I can. Sparring is not on the agenda for a while as I learn.
From what research I've done, it would appear that 'Winning' gloves offer great protection and comfort. I'm happy to pay the price as a long term investment in my hands and wrists.
I see they come in various weights and I'm at a loss as to which weight to choose - I *think* that for my size and intentions, either a 14oz or 16oz would be best but as a novice I'm open to any advice and guidance. As I say, money is not the deciding factor - protection and support is paramount.
And yes - I was daft enough to not use any hand wraps which I'm sure, along with my poor technique, hasn't helped my hands and wrists, so any pointers on wraps would be appreciated too.
Thanks in advance.
EDIT:- The other gloves I'm looking at are Ringside Pro Style IMF Tech. Has anyone tried the Quick Tie Tech lace system?
Any feedback or comparisons between those two? Thanks.
