California police officer must call off chase after Tesla patrol car battery runs low

A Tesla electric patrol car with the Fremont, Calif., Police was forced to back off from a pursuit after the vehicle's battery ran low in the middle of the chase.

Just slowed down to six miles of battery on the Tesla, so I may lose it here in a sec,?the officer in the pursuit said, according to police radio transmissions obtained by KPIX 5.?If someone else is able, can they maneuver into the No. 1 spot??br />
Other officers then took over the pursuit. The chase was called off after it was deemed unsafe because of the reckless driving of the suspect. The suspects vehicle was later found abandoned in San Jose.

The department is in the midst of a pilot program using 2014 Tesla model S 85 vehicles as part of Fremonts push to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 25 percent from its 2005 baseline by 2020.

The Tesla wasnt fully charged at the beginning of the shift,?a Fremont police spokesperson told KPIX 5. This, unfortunately, happens from time to time, even in our vehicles that run on gas, if they arent refueled at the end of a shift.?br />
The Fremont Police Department did not immediately return a request for comment from Fox News. However, Fremont Police spokeswoman Geneva Bosquez told CNN the general guideline for electric vehicles is that they should be at least half-full at the beginning of the shift, as this particular vehicle was.

Sounds like the cops f#cked up by not recharging the car.

But as batteries get better, like they keep getting, this will be less of an issue.

Isn't that why they bring in a helicopter to aid in a pursuit?

lmfao, nothing they can do about that im sure. Last i seen was they are at the point of diminishing returns, if they add more batterys it adds more weight and cancels out the benefits of more batteries.

Then a hybrid is probably better, so the gas part can kick in at some point.

Sounds like the technology isn't ready for the demands of emergency response vehicles. Especially since you can gas up a vehicle in less than 5 minutes but it may take an hour or more to charge an electric car up. Hybrid should have been the way to go if they insisted on taking an environmental approach. Good thing this wasn't an ambulance taking someone to the ER or a fire truck racing to a bad blaze.

why is this news? electric cars run out of fuel just like a petrol/diesel car.lol It's the cops fault for not checking the charge.

its so pathetic all the news stories coming out to desperately discredit electric cars.

"a battery could explode". mean while petrol/diesel cars literally need hundreds of explosions every minute in order to run. 1 electric car goes on fire its headlines. Hundreds of gas cars catch on fire, nobody cares.

EVs will be the future of law enforcement. Its actually perfect for patrol since the noise it makes is minimal. They can creep up on people without being noticed.

How is this any different from a car running out of fuel?

You can get 335 miles range from them.
                    They accelerate much quicker
You can charge up to 80% in 20 minutes and charging technology is improving all the time.
5 minutes or 20 minutes both are going to F*** up your chase.

Tesla gives far greater performance than hybrid cars.

The issue was not charging it up properly, human error, not the car.
