    Power vs Technique

I train with this one guy, he has ben around MUCh longer than me but his technique is horrid.

The only hing that saves him is his strength.

He tries to power out of everythign and miserably fails and my base isn't even tahat good (in my opinion)

anyway I cann't tap him, I can sweep him and pass his guard to problem but can't sub him. I often give him guard just to get out and get back on top.

    any sugestions?

Work on your technique. If you can't tap a guy using brute strength, your technique can't be that good. I have to grapple with guys stronger than me all the time, it's just part of the game, another bullett in the gun, figure out ways to use his strength against him when he's using pure power to defend submissions or go for them.

Oh and BTW......BJJ is all about tech....not muscle. Dont worry about tapping him. Jus dominate the position, because thats whats its all about, having good position. Subs will follow trust me. I am a realatively(sp) strong guy and power outta nothing. It wont help me get better...as he will not get better. Hope this helps.

Mate, I'm a pretty strong guy and believe me, it's all about technique. I can bench over 300 fairly easily on a good day and I tap out to anyone. I tap out to Arju on fingerlocks for gods sake.

Strength is nice, it's a bonus. But it doesn't beat technique.

everyone I train with is bigger than me. To the point that when I fight smaller opponents I get dissoriented. I got the xp.

One thing I learned is to try and wear them out. Move fast, make them haul around that muscle.

also, if he uses power, put him in a position wear he tries to muscle out, when he pushes, let em up fast and explode with a sub. ( ex. Sudo with the 360 position rear naked choke )

practice " lightning Submission style" its what I call it.

What you need to know is this. Strength makes a difference. If you were to take to guys with the same technique the stonger guy would win theroretically. Therefore it is always best to know the proper technique. Strength on the other hand makes up for bad technique.

Look at this senario. You are in a fight on the street and a guy you are fighting ios much stronger then you. If he can muscle out of your arm bar evn though you had perfect technique , what good does that do you? It doesnt do you any good.

The key is to learn technique. If strength was emphasized then there would be no need to learn a particular art. Dont forget that sometimes strength will bet you out of situations.
