Dana White: Fedor Emelianenko not ‘one of the greatest of all-time,’ should have retired ‘a few years ago’

Dana White and Fedor Emelianenko never managed to do business, which is just fine with the UFC president.

On Saturday, the legendary Emelianenko competed in his retirement bout in the main event of Bellator 290, where he lost by first-round knockout to heavyweight champion Ryan Bader. Afterward, Emelianenko was celebrated in an in-cage ceremony that included other legends of the sport, including former UFC champions Randy Couture, Matt Hughes, Quinton Jackson, Frank Shamrock, and Mark Coleman.

Later that evening, White was asked for his thoughts on Emelianenko fighting for the last time.

“Listen, what is the guy, like, 46?” White said at the UFC Vegas 68 post-fight press conference. “He shouldn’t be fighting. But he’s a grown-ass man who can do whatever he wants to do, but yeah, he probably should have hung it up a few years ago.”

Emelianenko is widely recognized as not only one of the best fighters of all-time, but the best to never compete inside the octagon. There were several reported stop-and-start negotiations between Emelianenko’s team over the years, but the sides never came to an agreement. Couture actually attempted to arrange a bout with Emelianenko outside of the UFC amid a contract dispute before eventually returning to the promotion in 2008.

Despite their tumultuous history, White insisted that the failure to come to an agreement with Emelianenko was never personal.

“No, I don’t dislike Fedor or anything like that,” White said. “But no, it didn’t happen. We gave it a shot. You can’t say we didn’t try. We gave it a shot and it is what it is.”

When White was asked if he felt that Emelianenko tarnished his legacy by fighting well past his prime, White attempted to be diplomatic before making it clear that Emelianenko’s rsum?isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be in his opinion.

“I don’t want to s*** on the guy,” White said. “He’s retiring tonight and all that stuff, but you guys know the deal with interviews with me, I never thought Fedor was that — I mean he got knocked out by middleweight Dan Henderson.

“I think some of the guys in the business, people liked him, so they praised him, he never got to test himself over here. I was never one of the guys that thought he was one of the greatest of all-time.”

Pride had a better, much deeper HW division when Fedor was in his prime.

Strikeforce also had the better and more competitive HW division when Fedor was fighting there.

Besides Brock and Mir, the UFC division was weak until 2010, when guys like Cain and Dos Santos were stepping up.

UFC had Arlovski and Tim Sylvia, but no other prime top names in the early to mid 00s. When Fedor was fighting Nogueira and Cro Cop, the UFC HW division was so weak they tried bringing back guys like Kimo and Tank Abbott.

I miss Kimo carrying the cross to the cage.

Not only that, but Fedor went on to beat both Sylvia and Arlovski, plus former UFC heavyweight champs Coleman and Randleman. So yeah, Fedor fought the better heavyweights. Dana is such a phony. You know he's just pissed off he couldn't sign Fedor so now he's crapping all over his legacy. Guy's the best heavyweight ever and it bothers him that the best heavyweight ever never stepped foot in a UFC octagon. Kinda like when Vince McMahon or Triple H act like they don't think too highly of someone that never worked for WWE, but you hear about them trying to sign that same wrestler or team behind the scenes and maybe even making their hall of fame years later. Hypocrites.

There ya go. Total phony douchebag. And also saying Fedor wasn't that good because of a past prime loss to Hendo is like saying Muhammad Ali wasn't that good because he got stopped by Larry Holmes or that Joe Louis was never that good because he lost to Ezzard Charles and Rocky Marciano. I know Fedor was just shy of 35 and Louis was 37, Ali 38, but 1, not much younger and 2, extremely battle tested. The guy had a 9 year winning streak where he beat some of the best heavyweights, including 4 UFC heavyweight champions. So he needs to shut up already about bashing Fedor.

Fedor has his place in mma history but the hard fact is he has very small wins in a cage and most his wins were in one organization under different rules in a different environment that favored strikers . He’s never really beat anyone that hasn’t lost before multiple times . He’s a top 5 but definitely not top 3 for me . Not being a ufc champion ever hurts anyones legacy bc that’s the gold standard that’s not debatable .

disagree... pride's HW was 90% little fat japanese guy. easy work for fedor. look at guys like cro cop, fought majority of his career in japan against smaller guys and then when he came to the US, got knocked out from his signature head kick by a fat brazilian! LOL.

                    Fedor is a legend. Period.

If Kabob is a Hall of Famer, Fedor is a legend
