I embrace the facts, depending on who they are reflected, you can reject them So as you see I'm not 100% Johnson. This fight did not happen.
That's where GhostofDempsey also trolls for his forgery material apparently. You guys need to give it up

I feel like I murdered the idea and you're like nah, could happen.
They guy who wrote it said it's fake.
The paper that reprinted it said it's fake
Contemporary papers that covered the subject said it's fake
The only thing that doesn't outright say it was faked is Fight Beat.
Dempsey doesn't confirm or deny.
Johnson wasn't even asked.
Pollack's book, I didn't bring into this because I didn't think it was needed, also states JJ and JD were not in the same place.
Seems pretty well debunked to me. When the source you use doesn't say what you claim your story is debunked by your own source.
I don't see where Pearson or his editor factually debunked it. Everything about the article is obliquely fuzzy in that it is obviously possible from the timelines and interest shown by JJ in the fight. JJ also wanted to fight Joe Louis, but nobody ever wrote that happened and there were zero offers to make that fight.
Understand, son, I'm not the one saying the fight happened, nor am I the one saying it didn't happen. I don't have to prove anything other than it was possible and there was interest in the fight.
Bunch of teens had a furtive fightclub going here at our city park going on for near a year. I can neither prove that I was never there nor that I wasn't there, but I heard about when the participants were busted. None were interviewed, and none were charged with crimes, a little nothing affair in the greater going ons in a big city.

But what's fuzzy about "This is the first of a series of articles by Ray Pearson describing mythical battles between present day champions and those of a decade or more ago." ? I lifted that directly from the Tribune article directly and got the article from the Tribune's own archive site.

Jeffries is said to have offered JJ a private fight to the finish bareknuckler in bar cellar of his watering hole when he slapped a fistful of Gold Eagles on the bar after JJ had been harassing him for a title fight. Nobody debunked that yet neither, but both the offer and fight could've happened, but if the fight did, the public bar patrons would've been the witnesses.

I've never heard a version, complete with round-by-round coverage, of the Jeffries cellar fight where Jack accepts and they set to in a basement. Everyone tells that story with the end being Jack left, there was no fight. So what's their to debunk? Some **** talk?
No one tries to debunk Sully-Godfrey either, probably because no one claims there was a super secrete fight only rich folk knows about. Probably because no one claims a fight ever happened.

- -Look at your fight title. You state it as a fact punctuated with? Then you get all smarmy righteous that the fight never happened even the only eye witness living obliquely infers the fight happened without saying that it did. Btw, had a conversation with a buddy of Erskin who vouched for his integrity, but Lou being now presumably dead is no longer available. Some dumb drunk editor making a blanket statement about Pearsons articles most of which entailed legit coverage of fights obviously misses the point of when truth becomes stranger than fiction. Face it, you just ate ye olde boomerang in the teeth. Maybe hire a dentist for extraction or admit you flubbed the whole topic and let it drop. No matter, it's classic boxing lore nearing it's 100 yr anniversary, so be happy you follow a sport of such legends that you still struggle with.

I don't even see an attempt to explain why every point of coverage was sure to point out it's a fantasy fight until the 1985 article.

As it turned out the articles were just Spanish reprints from the local London newspapers, with the names of the victims and locations changed to local names, e.g. Annie became Maria; London, San Salvador. What we still don't know is how the San Salvadorian newspaper was offering these articles, as a truth or merely as fictional entertainment.Last edited by Willie Pep 229; 02-27-2021, 06:22 PM.Marchegiano likes this.
