If I was ever a champion, with clout, I would have refused both.
Steele stopped them too soon; Lane imposed himself too much on the dynamic of the fight.
Plus I hate 'showboaters' and Lane never saw a camera he couldn't mug for.

To be fair to the OP I am going to answer, but it is a lesser of two evils decision.
If I was a fighter with only some clout I'd take Lane. I figure having Lane interfere with what I'm doing is safer than having Steele stealing the fight from me.
I guess, I came to not trust Steele, but I don't have any real proof. Just too many early stoppages. Maybe just his nature, but I have felt them often too soon.Last edited by Willie Pep 229; 01-14-2024, 12:26 PM.Slugfester likes this.

Mercante?
Each to their own.
So you don't really assess them.
Steele and Lane were at their hight in the 80s and 90s when boxing was all over cable TV and I saw a plethora of fights and referees live (on TV).
I would also like to throw out the name Ruby Goldstein but it would be the same, I only saw him on replays.
One notices what the referee is doing when you're invested into a fight live, but don't really care when watching a reply. Does that sound weird?
Are you going to vote? I am curious, to see how posters pick between just those two. It's like *****-Trump. LOL "Just lill me."

Both were excellent referees in my opinion.
I have no problem with Steele stopping the Taylor/Chavez bout.
In hindsight we know that Taylor was looking to his corner for instruction, instead of looking at Steele when he asked him that question. Steele asked the question and Taylor was just looking away. Incoherent, wave it off!

Yea of course, but my problem is that I was young when Mercante Sr. was referee and I would be voting more for legend (even from my own youth) than I would from personal experience. I would usually see a Mercante Sr. bout on replay and one tends not to notice the referee when watching replays unless there was a controversy.

Lane! A real character and en excellent ref imo. Mills was also a Nevada judge and carried an air of such in the ring, he had gravitas and the ability to get guys to listen with his Elmor Fudd theatrics.
I would: not mind have being in the man's court, nor with being a fighter under his authority as a ref... But if i was a wabbit? No way!! would I want to be in his presence!!!
