Measuring CHIN! What is your criteria?

Ability to get back up from a knockdown(Frazier, Ali)

Ability to stay on your feet, and not get down in the first place(Oliver Mccall, Hagler)

Ability to take punishment without suffering serious longterm damage(Foreman, Lamotta)

How would you rank those 3 factors when judging a boxers chin and what more would you add to the list? Personally I put little stock in getting up from a knockdown, as I feel that has more to do with Heart, and conditioning rather than CHIN.

Do you think Rid**** Bowe's chin was weak considering he was finished at such a young age... while Holyfield was able to go on for a decade and a half longer? What are your thoughts?

I think the first one is quite important. However it does favour heart and mental toughness slightly more than a chin.

However I think that your mind and your chin are related. If your mind is not in the right place than you chin won't be either.

There are better examples of this. Can't think of them right now though.

pretty simple; how hard is it to hurt a guy
knocking him down isn't a good gauge, since balance can cause it

I agree with who said a mental edge helps. I also agree with the factors you mentioned being part of it. Also physical conditioning and strength are big factors. Guys like Foreman and LaMotta were very strong fighters too.

The only thing I might disagree with is about Bowe's chin being weak. Agreeded he didn't have a chin as good as Ali and Foreman. But his chin stood up to alot of punches from some good punchers. His chin was not really so questionable before the Golota fight and he was hit by harder hitters before that.

He simply took too many head shots and was brain damaged early, he hasn't got a weak chin, he took plenty of shots and wouldn't fall down for anyone, I do find it kind of disturbing how quickly he got brain damaged though compared to other boxers so kind of see what you mean, punches juts effect people at different paces I guess, and his last fight was in 08 which would make his age 41.

Frazier was knocked down several times by Foreman who is regarded as the hardest punching heavyweight in history yet Frazier was clearly not "GLASSY-EYED"... every human being has a nerve in their chin which when hit cuts off the oxygen supply to the brain which then renders them unconscious or semi-unconscious depending on their physical condition and other factors, which is why Boxers cover & protect their chin at all times during the fight... some boxers have "Weak Chins" others have "Granite Chins" fighters like Chuvalo, Hagler, McCall, LaMotta have Granite Chins.... fighters like Audley Harrison, Lennox Lewis, Ricky Hatton have Weak Chins so get called `China-Chin` by followers of the sport because when they get hit on the chin they go down and are "GLASSY-EYED" and are unconscious or semi-unconscious regardless of wether they regain their feet or not they are in no condition to continue due to the "GLASSY-EYED" condition which they are in... Whereas Joe Frazier was sent to the canvas 6 times by Foreman yet got to his feet "ready to go" each and every time, he was never "Glassy-eyed" so it is feasible to assume that Frazier has a very tough strong chin because it can never be replicated until we see a puncher of the calibre of George Foreman in the heavyweight division in the future... whereas Audley Harrison & Lennox Lewis was both poleaxed by mediocre journeymen and those journeymen never before or after during their entire career was able to poleaxe anyother of their opponents in the way that Harrison & Lewis went down and the condition (GLASSY-EYED) which they was in when hit on the chin, so its safe to say that they are "Weak-Chinned"
