Good fight. Lyle might be able to stop Patterson if he gets to him early in the fight but that's I think his only chance.. As a heavyweight Floyd really only got floored in the early rounds.. and lyle's best work was in the early to mid rounds. so If Lyle doesn't stop Patterson early I definitely think that Patterson wins a decision.. too fast and savvy for Lyle.

I am also inclined to pick Patterson more because he showed he could come back more often then not.. Lyle got knocked around a lot in his biggest fights, and his greatest moments were probably outboxing a past it Ali and knocking foreman down twice in a fight (in losing efforts).. He did beat shavers though, and won a decision against Scott ledoux.. (Ledoux knocked Lyle down early in the fight, makes me question lyle's durability)...Floyd's are beating Ingemar johannson, chuvalo, bonavena, Archie Moore, and in my opinion smoking Jimmy ellis.. so he is definitely more proven.

Lyle's best chance in this fight would be an Early stoppage. if not Patterson takes it on points.

Floyd was the better fighter. I just can't trust his chin against a big guy who could really hit.

This could very well happen.. I think it depends how Lyle fights Patterson. Lyle's power was nothing very special. his best knockout was over shavers, after a grueling war. that was more attrition then pure power. Lyle never really KO'd anyone of great note. A past prime Patterson did school bonavena pretty easily, who was comparable to Lyle in strength and power. Thats how the fight might turn out actually, except a prime Floyd would be much faster and sharper with his combos.
I personally think Lyle wasn't all that good. he was a slugger with good punching power, and took advantage over past prime all time greats and still lost. plus let's not forget Lyle got outboxed by young and quarry, two skilled counterpunchers. Patterson might do the same

I could see Patterson's speed and skills getting him a decision. What I don't agree with is your judgement of Lyle's power. Except for Liston it was superior to any of Floyd's opponents, IMO. Even though he lost, his power was evident in his fight with Foreman. It was the only time that George was ever dropped when he wasn't exhausted.

I don't see it. ingemar johannson could certainly have a better right hand then Lyle. so could Moore.
Sure, his power was evident. but it still wasn't pure power. he wore foreman down with his shots. he didn't have one punch KO power. and disagree that he wasnt exhausted because they had been trading leather the whole fight.

If Lyle was such a puncher, then where did he how it in other fights? he showed he can land good shots on a past prime, depressed foreman then that I agree with. but he didn't really show this great power in other fights.

Cripes! I can't believe how low regarded Patterson is around here: You'd swear we were talking about Berbick or Rahman FFS

If it helps I'd pick him over Berbick or Rahman.

Floyd was one of my childhood favorites, but I just don't like the way he matches up against tall heavyweights with power. Remember that Patterson was only a middleweight in the Olympics while Lyle was probably a heavyweight already when he was 15. Floyd was good, but not Manny Pacquaio good. You can't look at his record and find wins over contenders 6'3+ with legit power.

Well, Lyle never matched up with good counter punchers either. Young and Quarry really exposed Lyle. You can say that Floyd can't take a good shot but he was actually only stopped by liston, johannson, and Ali. Lyle doesn't come close to any of these 3 in terms of skills and he certainly doesn't match ingo or liston in power.
Like I said, Lyle didn't really beat anybody with the skills or hand speed of Floyd Patterson. Lyle really looked best in losing efforts. Floyd did manage to beat Lyle, Ellis, bonavena, machen, johannson, and chuvalo. Much better wins then Lyle.
