De La Hoya was nicknamed "The Golden Boy of boxing" by the media when he represented the United States at the 1992 Summer Olympics where, shortly after having graduated from James A. Garfield High School, he won a gold medal in the lightweight division, and reportedly "set a sport back on its feet."

by the way I am aware that Canelo is not yet retired but without much opposition at 168 and likely not willingly fight at 175. I think his career won't end much that better or worse at the end of his career.

-Arturo Gatti (33-4) a two division champion at 135-140, after his 5th round TKO by Oscar, he had a trilogy with Micky Ward, winning 2 out of 3 fights.

-Ike Quartey (34-0-1, 29 KOs) who was WBA Welterweight Champion, he had beaten Vince Phillips who went to beat Micky Ward and knockout undefeated Kostya Tszyu (18-0-1). The bout was close, from what I saw Quartey had taken over round 5 to the 10th after Oscar had won the initial four rounds, but De La Hoya made a comeback in the last two rounds. Both Oscar and Ike were knocked in the 6th round and De La Hoya scored another knockdown in the 12th round, overwhelming his opponent to the ropes in the end of the round.

At 154, he had beaten:

-Yori Boy Campas (80-5) IBF Champion after pulling the upset against Raul Marquez by TKO.

-Javier Castillejo (51-4) who was the WBC Champion. Oscar's first bout at 154.

-Fernando Vargas (22-1, 18 KOs) IBF and WBA Champion with wins over Yori Boy Campas, Raul Marquez, Wilfredo Rivera, Javier Castillejo, Ike Quartey and Winky Wright, Fernando had tested positive for a steroid called stanozol and had overwhelmed Oscar initially until he recovered and stopped him in the 11th round.

At 160, he had beaten:

-Felix Sturm (20-0) who became a champion at 160 and 168. Though the win can be considered quite controversial.

-Ricardo Mayorga (27-5-1) with two wins over Vernon Forrest at 147. The bout was held at 168 however.

-He had won the gold medal in the Olympics after turning 19 year old three months later. Oscar had amateur career included 234 wins,163 by knockout, and six losses.

-His loss to Felix Trinidad is quite controversial.
