Comments Thread For: Canelo-Lara Not a Bad Decision: Post Report Card

Levi Martinez screwed Erislandy Lara on Saturday night by a score of 117-111. That didn’t cost Lara the fight.

    Lara cost Lara the fight.

Even with one absurd score, it’s hard to debate too hard about the outcome. This scribe saw it even. Many saw it 115-113 for Saul Alvarez. Still others saw it roughly the same for Lara. That was the fair range of scores.

That was the final outcome on two of the official nods. Jerry Roth liked Lara by that score. Dave Moretti like Alvarez the same way. Flip two rounds on either card, and we get the same verdict.

even on speed and defence? really?
intangibles even also? Canelo had the Martínez factor and the Oscar's adopted son factor.

Sure Canelo was aggressive but it was ineffective aggression and very inaccurate

Like I said.. Win or Lose don't matter now. THE WAY LARA FOUGHT ON SATURDAY... NOBODY WILL PAY TO SEE THAT ON A PPV. BUT THEY WILL PAY TO SEE CANELO FIGHT ON PPV.. And I'm just talking about how both guys fought Saturday night... even though canelo didn't do much, people will pay to see his style of fighting and NOBODY wants to pay to see Lara fight ever again.

I said it before the fight, in order to win this fight both fighters needed to impress and win decisively. Neither fighter did enough to win decisively, neither fighter was impressive. This fight was close and could have gone either way, on this night it went Canelo's way and that's that.

IMO Lara had the goods to beat Canelo, in fact the first 3 rounds were all Lara, and I was beginning to think Canelo had bitten more than he could chew, but after the third and the middle rounds it all changed. Canelo began to connect on body shots, Lara began to throw less, and then there were large lengths in rounds were he didn't throw anything. I agree with the winner here, Canelo was the more aggressive fighter, did more to win the fight, and did just enough to win.

No robbery here, LARA robbed himself here.

That was the biggest stage Lara had ever been on and he wasted it. Win or lose he could have made a name for himself and had people wanting to see him again if he had just given a better performance.

Instead he fought very negatively and without urgency. I suspect that most of those in attendance or watching on tv will be very reluctant to ever make time for him again.

you may or may not be right. problem is none of what you say has anything to do with the scoring criteria. and that's what everyone has an issue with.

does canelo even need to fight again? we know he's extremely popular and generates a lot of money, why not just bump his record up to 100-0, give him honourary belts for every division and have done with it?

professional boxing is entertainment, sure, but it has rules and there are official ways to win. anything outside of that is just cheap and tacky.

Really good article by Cliff Rold.

"In asking if Lara could have done more, might it also be asking if he could be someone else? There is a belief in some that Lara can be more than he is but, at this point, might that be a flawed premise?"

Lara is who he is. He'll show flashes of being a special fighter but he'll always revert back to his same ways.

look at the polls dude, you are in the minority, the general opinion is that the fight was close, if you cant see that you dont know boxing, and if you know boxing you should know that there is no room for words like robbery or gift in a close fight...
