Comments Thread For: Kovalev's Coach Pleased With Camp, Praises Andre Ward's Smarts

Currently IBF, WBA, WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev (30-0, 26KOs) is up in the mountains of Big Bear, California preparing for his November 19th showdown against Andre Ward (30-0, 15KOs). And early on, his trainer John David Jackson likes what he sees.

John David Jackson: "... just going over strategy watching Ward fights, picking him apart and seeing what he does best. He's a very intelligent fighter, I didn't realize how intelligent he was until I watched him and studied him. He's a good fighter."

JDJ may be either a ****** or a shrewd tongue-in-cheek guy...

JDJ playing more mind games which is healthy in a big fight!

I liked the itty bitty trash talk both fighters got going on!

This sets the stage for a competitive sport like boxing for next year!!

I can't ****ing wait, props to all promoters and both fighters for this fight especially with all the businessmen in the sport!

Glad we got 2 fighters with the spirit of old school warriors!

Always liked JDJ. He's my favorite trainer to hear from - class act always and intelligent. Abel talks out of his butt to generate headlines, Hunter's bitter and a little coocoo, Roach contradicts himself, Garcia is just a moron, and Teddy Atlas is full on bat**** crazy.

        JDJ for the win.

5 weeks before the fight and Jackson has realised that undefeated, gold medalist, pound-for-pound mainstay, Andre Ward is actually a pretty good boxer.

          Who knew?

I can't wait for this one.

I don't think anything JDJ is going to do now will help Kovalev. He either wins with his style and power or he doesn't.

I think Kovalev has a good chance to win but it's hard to imagine Ward being out boxed or beaten on a decision and it's just so hard to hit him cleanly.

Of course, we all said that about Hopkins as well.

Like his style or not, JDJ has to train Kovalev to have some intelligence (if possible) to have a chance to win against Ward. Just walking inside with brute power will lead to a wide unanimous decision loss. He has to be jab, fight smart and know when to take his power shots. Ward has an excellent counter and great defense mixed in with knowing when to hold. This is boxing not brawling...so hope Kovalev is ready!

5 weeks of training in Big Bear then 4 in Oxnard? The benefits of high altitude training won't be felt if they're in Oxnard for a month after Big Bear...
