The Art of The Big Punch: No Doubting Marciano

Rocky Marciano, ***** and all, was one of the most thrilling and courageous fighters in boxing history. That much I would hope we can all agree on. When writing about Marciano these days, I always feel like a man tip-toeing through a minefield. Rocky has become very much the favourite punching bag of the revisionists, particularly those who are desperate to make a name for themselves on a slow news day.

The consolation for Marciano, the never-say-die Brockton Blockbuster, is that he is slowly acquiring some illustrious companions. Throw Jack Dempsey and Mike Tyson into the melting pot and it positively boils over. The forums buzz, the replies click up into the hundreds and the juicy language is on a par with Tony Soprano throwing a bad one at the Ba-Da-Bing. [details]

Mike, I respect you; you know I do. You are, by far, one of the most learned minds and brilliant writers I have ever had the priveledge to read. However, allow me to bring up an old chestnut...

The Need for the Devil's Advocate:

If one repeats something over and over again without question....there is a danger of falling into the trap of believing a myth. Rocky was indeed great as was Dempsey, Johnson, Louis, and, of course, Ali......and Holmes. I, for another, don't understand all the knocking these great old champions endure; but no one is beyond reproach. That being said, I do applaud you for drawing attentiong to it and it's senselessness and base in bias.

However, just as a man's significance can be argued down by an intelligent mind despite the obvious facts, so can a man be argued up with the passage of time. Eager young minds who never saw a great old fighter at his best are just as easily convinced he was the greatest thing since white sliced bread as a young closed minded fan can come to his own conclusion that none of those old guys would stand a chance against the miracles of modern training that step foot into the prize ring today.

"opening our minds" is necessary every now and then, for if we keep it closed, no new light of knowledge may shine in amongst the cobwebs of accepted "facts".

    Good read as always.

Shouldn't this post be called "Having white skin makes up for being a untalented loser who made a career off fighting small unskilled bums?"Yeah that is what this post should be called.

Don't read much, do ya? Read the piece before touching the keys, otherwise you're gonna come off as just another ignorant racist with a computer.
