This shows the strong hatred against, and double standard against, GGG within the American boxing media.
Jacobs knocks down Derevyanchenko once early, wins the fight by 1 round, everyone says it proves he's a top middleweight, and he's a worthy "top opponent" for Canelo.
GGG knocks down Derevyanchenko once early, wins the fight by 1 or more rounds, but some in the media are saying he's shot, he can't compete with Canelo anymore, and so on.
What in the actual #@&%?
Canelo vs GGG 3 is still the biggest fight in boxing. The first two fights still did not provide a clear winner getting the official win. Even if GGG is 38, a clear win for either in a third fight is still the defining performance of their careers.
Are we all forgetting styles make fights? In some ways GGG looked more vulnerable vs Derevyanchenko than before, but he never looked close to even going down once, let alone getting knocked out. I think we're all so used to him looking invincible that we're overreacting now to the first sign of vulnerability.
For context, Canelo is fighting Kovalev next. Compare how Kovalev looked at the end of the first Alvarez fight to how GGG looked vs Derevyanchenko, if you want to talk about vulnerable, or "shot," fighters who are no longer worthy of fighting Canelo. GGG never even came close to that. So as I was saying, in some ways GGG looked more vulnerable, but in other ways he looked more clever and active and accurate landing power shots than he has since his prime. Banks didn't do a great job in some areas but he did do a good job in a few others, and it showed.
I'm not sure Canelo will get past Kovalev, but even if he doesn't, GGG vs Canelo 3 is still the fight that needs to happen in the MIDDLEWEIGHT division to determine a true #1. Then once we have the true #1, the rest of the division can start rolling and those fights will mean a lot more.
Right now, Canelo vs Andrade is marred by the fact that most don't feel Canelo is #1 at 160. GGG vs Andrade, similar thing, most feel he's #1, but officially he's #2. And same goes for Charlo or Saunders fighting these guys. Canelo vs GGG need to settle their business so that there is one guy, and one torch, ready to be passed to the next guy.
