Two FIGHTS prior to him fighting GGG he was fighting at Jr middle (no catch weight) for the WBO.

GGG was a beast. But it’s not like Canelo wasn’t making a couple good fights leading up to GGG. And it’s not like Canelo couldn’t still make 154 either. Just cuz a fighter doesn’t move up doesn’t mean he’s ducking. If that’s the case, GGG / Ward.

Canelo needed some time to eat his beef and move up the “right” way. To make sure that he was in the best shape possible to be in the fight. And he did. He lost the first one though, in my opinion. Then he ate even more beef and ran it right back.

But to your point, the Amir Khan fight was a clear duck that infuriated me. I won’t front like I was cool with that.

I’m honestly not a big Canelo fan, believe it or not. But I give props to the resume and the willingnesss to fight everyone. He’s p4p number one to me because of the names on his ledger. Tainted beef and all.

Note that I did not dispute the existence of his popularity, I mused as to the reasons for him having one.

N.B. I'll remain unconvinced over the appropriateness of using the word "clout" in this context although I get where you are coming from.
I don't think we disagree on much. As for the word clout, it is simply a commonly used as a synonym for the word power. In this case, I was referring to Canelo's market power. I think I understand why Canelo is popular with some folks. I also understand why some people loath him, but I must confess I am clueless as to why anyone gives two twits about the Kardashians.

And he ducked Trinidad, Hopkins, and Roy Jones Jr. in their PRIME!!!
Don't forget Canelo also ducked Jake LaMotta, Marcel Cerdan and Carlos Monzon in their prime. Plus he also ducked, Drago, Clubber Lang, and Apollo Creed. I have to admit that Canelo is shameless ducking tough fights and fighting cherry-picks, like GGG, Lara, Trout, Cotto and Mayweather and now Kovalev.

valid points but here's my perspective. He fought Cotto which was understandable because Cotto was lineal and a big name, but Cotto was 10 yrs older and probably 20 pounds smaller than Canelo. After that, he chose khan who had been ko'd twice brutally in lower weight classes and hadn't been a world champion in any weight class for about 5 yrs. Then he moved back to 154 (probably with the assistance of clen) to face the weakest champion in Smith. At that time both Charlo bros and Lara had belts. Why choose Smith? Then after spending almost 2 yrs saying he needed to grow 5 pounds into 160, he shot right past that and faced Chavez Jr at 163.5 who had just quit 2 fights before. Now he can get credit for facing ggg twice even though he waited that fight out and credit for jacobs. But fielding was clearly a joke fight and while Kovalev is a good fight, he's not the best in the division and there are much younger and credible options from 160-75. Guys who are in their prime, world champions and don't have the wear and tear of Kovalev.

I don't know if Canelo truly believes in his heart of hearts that he bested GGG twice. If the fight is so easy, why not take it? The obvious answer is the real animosity he has towards Golovkin. He doesn't like him and because of that, he won't fight him again. DAZN should have flexed their muscles and pressured Canelo into that fight.

I respect it. I don’t look at it as him needing to grow 5 lbs to fight just ANYONE. I think Canelo and Golden boy knew that to GGG was a much larger challenge than anyone else, and wanted Alvarez in top form to fight him. I don’t really take anything away from the Chávez fight. It was a big payday to shut a guy up. 160. 170. 200 lbs whatever , canelo was the better fighter so he could take those risks and allow Chávez to come in however he wanted.

For GGG he couldn’t do that. And he didn’t. I give him credit for fighting him at 160, no catch weight. I give him credit for not getting knocked out. I give him credit for doing an immediate rematch and actually fighting a lot more aggressively in the rematch.

All in all if you look at Canelos career he didn’t spend A LOT of time at 160 (or 155+) fighting people OTHER than Golovkin.

He’s probably had 6 or 7 fights above 154 if I had to guess. Two were GGG one was Cotto (the lineal champ) and one was Jacobs. So if he took it “easy”
On 3/7 of his middle weight fights, (Chavez. Khan. Fielding) I think he deserves some credit, and at the very least shouldn’t be labeled a “ducker”.

Now, if your complaint is about PED usage, that’s another story.

Actually the Smith fight was for the WBO SMW Belt and the WBO allows a Champ at a lower class to fight a champ at the higher ones. Saunders was the MW Champ and they made Canelo his mandatory if he wanted it. It was a chess move to get more leverage. Then a few months later he signed to fight GGG.

Ppl forget that fight was signed before Chavez fight...

Actually the Liam Smith fight was for the 154 lb WBO belt. Smith won the vacant belt fighting John Thompson and defended it a couple times before losing it to Alvarez. Wasn’t fought at a catch weight or Canelo weight. He made 154 to stop Smith for that belt. Then moved on to JCC jr. then moved on to GGG. Liam Smith has never fought above 154. He actually tried to win his belt back from Jaime Mungia recently and lost a decision.

So credit to Alvarez for still being able to make 154, but going up to 160 to face GGG. Anyone who does that isn’t a ducker. Sergio Martinez didn’t do it. Nor Sturm. Nor Cotto. And they all had belts at 160.

Alvarez moves UP to fight him. And fought him i
                  twice.

Hmm...Max is employed by ESPN. By this logic, if he is, in your opinion susceptible to his employer's pressure, wouldn't it be logical to assume he might play ESPN's tune? Its not like he is a freelancer-millionaire doing this as a hobby, right? He just changed a.s.s that he needs to kiss.

And he is dead wrong on GGG. We all set up impossibly high standards for GGG and when he, naturally, does not satisfy our ridiculous expectations, we throw him into the mud. People are weird.

I think Canelo/GGG 3 MUST happen. This needs to be a trilogy. It would be up there with Gatti/Ward Barrera/Morales Pacquiao/Morales Bowe/Holyfield Ali/Frazier Patterson/Johansson etc. etc. etc. . . Canelo/GGG would be a super memorable rivalry as a trilogy
