So is power generated from your legs a myth?

I don't think it's a myth but you certainly don't need tree trunk quads and huge calves. Having 2 mile long arms certainly doesn't hurt either.

Erm.. if anything, Wilder proves it. Power comes from speed, specifically from the speed of rotation of your hips. If your legs are large, the rotation is slower. Wilder has very skinny legs and very long reach, which allows him to rotate his hips and follow through the punch across his whole reach.
His long reach is what makes the straight right so devastating, but also what makes his hooks just about average. Hooks also need rotation and acceleration in order to carry power, but because Wilder's arms are so long, and the frame is skinny, he doesn't get good acceleration on his hooks. It's why he looks like he's windmilling when throwing hooks - he tries to use them the same way as his straight right.

How do you define strength?
Just because Wilder doesn't have body builder legs, doesn't mean they aren't strong

Deontay is basically a supreme physical specimen. he is not the rule. he is 1 in a million type of exception. he has extremely dense bones with extremely strong tendons and enough muscles to turn his right hand into a whiplash.
your average 6'7 dude will not have the strength in their tendons to turn over a punch without some give in the ligaments. so the punch end up not having the impact. Look at all NBA fights. When was the last time you saw someone in the NBA 1 punch someone. I see them swing on dudes all the time and the other dude just take it flush without KD or nothing.
Being tall is actually disadvantage to punching power in most cases due to the ligaments being looser due to physics.
Look at someone like Jon Jones in MMA. he's built similarly to Wilder. He has 0 punching power despite training combat his entire adult life.

Deer have thin legs but can still jump really high. I think having thinner calves lets your legs move more quickly, so maybe it helps him get his feet in position faster.

You don't understand what that means. It has nothing to do with the musculature of the legs. It's the momentum created by the thrust. By your logic, Tommy Hearns should have had no power. As with everything in physics, it's about application, not appearance.
Wilder uses his legs and rotation of the hips and shoulders to generate big punches. Tyson Fury does not. Which is why he's a soft puncher, even though he's much bigger than Wilder.Last edited by Redd Foxx; 11-25-2019, 01:04 AM.
