Comments Thread For: Boxing Attempts To Grow Its Reach By Entering New Markets

By Corey Erdman - There are many boxing trends we'd probably all prefer be left behind in 2019: Major sanctioning bodies adding more world titles, networks' inability to cooperate with one another and those wacky tennis-ball-on-a-cable shadowboxing contraptions can all be left in the last decade along with flossing and JUUL pods. Cory Nerdman with his primary school knowledge...

“New Markets” is not reviving an ATL venue, or Chavez Jr. in a backup state. Or Andrade at hometown or the MSG ffs!!!!! Lol. Matchmaking and venue locations are by design. Just like why Uysk and Loma benefit from Chicago and NYC venues, yes, demographics or ethnic persuasion.

No! The only player in the game pushing “new markets” is Eddie Hearn OR DAZN. That’s what the article should be really about. Attracting a YouTube market to boxing at DAZN or getting the Saudi’s on a Brit vs a Mexican is legendary.

Errol Spence, Shawn Porter, Gervonta Davis, Terence Crawford and Deontay Wilder have cemented themselves as big attractions in the sport of boxing. It's now time to humble these mexicans who seem to think that because a boxer is mexican, they're automatically going to attract large crowds. My question is, outside of Canelo, which mexican champion is selling a ton of tickets at their events?

Emmanuel Navarete only sold 1.4k tickets in LA, Jose Ramirez only sold 2k tickets in Texas, Rey Vargas only sold 2.7k tickets in Carson. Terrible ticket sale numbers by these mexicans, and they fight in majority mexican areas too. So much for that mexican fan base and so much for Black Americans boxers not being able to sell fights, LOL!!

It's hilarious how these mexican boxing fans have rambled on for many years about how they're keeping "boxing alive in the USA" or how black boxers are "boring" or how black boxers are "killing the sport", but when you actually look at the numbers, these mexican champions can barely get to 2k ticket sales even when the average ticket price is like $20.

As if major commercial news outlets are saying “black American boxers don’t sell”

              Wdafuq!

Crowd size is important to know in gauging popularity, but that is only part of the picture. Broadcast numbers are also important and I don't think that one can assume that Black fighters are only followed by Black fans. I suspect that there were many more Mexicans and Mexican Americans watching the Garcia Spence fight than any Blacks.

Many Black boxers are popular across a wide racial and ethnic spectrum, including Mexican and Mexican Americans. Mexican fans are most passionate about soccer (futbol) and boxing where they are competitive at an international level, and they appreciate champion athletes regardless of race or ethnicity. The situation in the U.S. is bit different. This country is more passionate about basketball and football, sports dominated by Black athletes, and less so about boxing. I think the following is correct: As a group, Mexicans are more interested in boxing than Americans.

... this article is about "New Markets"...

... thus, the term "New Markets" needs to be defined even more, I guess...

With Ortiz, Rigo, Lara, Gamboa, DSG, Lubin, Thurman, Berto, Javier Fortuna, Barthelemy, Ugas, and Jeison Rosario in their stable, it's ridiculous that PBC hasn't tried to bring some fights to Orlando or Miami!
