Comments Thread For: Boxing Facing Financial Adjustments

By Tris Dixon - Whatever twists and turns remain in the era of the coronavirus pandemic, it's safe to say things aren't going back to normal any time soon. In the grand scheme of things, boxing is a footnote but with UK facing fresh, localised lockdown measures it's certainly unlikely that the crowds will be back. With that in mind, financial expectations across the board may...

... "Make less money or don’t fight... and there are plenty of boxers on the lower end of the pay scale that aren’t afforded that choice at all. But often we hear of these debates, money against legacy, and that is no more poignant than it is now. Sit and wait it out and hope the world collectively eases out of lockdown or make the best of a bad situation. The power lies with the fighters to block or charge through the end of 2020 and in to 2021."

It is all about the money. That is the simple ansere. I do not want to hear how a fighter and his family sacrifies so much without telling the rest of the story. The rest of the story if anyone dont know is the rest of the working world. Everyone is taking a loss except the ones with the most money and power. You either went to work during this Pandemic in the service industry or you lost your job and no hope of getting a dime from unemployment. No one seems to push that narative too hard or constant. Dangerous and deadly conditions are left for discussion of the Health Care workers only. But those in retail or any part of that chain did not have a choice as far as working or not working the dangers were not discussed on TV or elsewhere.
And lets get another thing straight with the dangerous angle. There is a whole work force out that looses lives limbs and is put in poverty for doing nothing but grabing a lunch bucket and a hard hat and working for your pay. So that is just one example of who does what at the perile of pain suffering loss of life, loss of family time. Just so we are clear on principles here. No disrespect to the writer he is a good writer. Could be an embassador of boxing now or someday. The em bassadors to boxing is another topic for another day. What I talk of is from personal experience not something from a book or second hand information. And that matters too.

I'm normally impressed by a Tris Dixon article but this was pointless, a strong of questions strung together and then published? Hey editors, what do you get paid for?

Anyway, boxing economics have been unsustainable for 25 years now, ever since HBO decided to invest heavily in fighters like RJ and Mayboy who didn't make huge returns. Obviously the second half of Mayweather's career was different but the huge sums he was paid to get there has essentially killed the US boxing PPV market. Look at their largely abysmal numbers post 2015.

On top of that, HBO has been run out of the business, Showtime isn't happy about what they're paying for and the DZM service is haemorrhaging money every day. Why? Because you can't keep paying fighters huge sums of money, mid level guys get paid what main eventers would have been paid 30 years ago...for fighting nobodies. And main eventers are now paid astronomical sums for fighting utter nobodies.

Look at the PBC, they couldn't even unify a division owned by them. Look at GBP and Canelo, they couldn't even make a 3rd GGG fight or have him fight a top fighter at 168. Look at Wilder and his team, they turned down career high paydays to avoid fighting AJ and try and take on an obese, sick Fury and endedu p being embarassed.

The sport as a business will either collapse or re-adjust itself.

Let's hope that all will go back to the old normal sometime in 2021. We don't need a vaccine as there are meds. There's a vaccine for flu and people still get the flu, so we just live as per usual. Back to boxing, I'd love to see Canelo fight the true light heavyweight champion, Beterbiev. Otherwise, I suppose a third fight with GGG or rather a fight with Benavidez would be better.

Damn! This Pandemic ruined everything but hopefully smaller promoters and fighters who are not with the major promoters can hold on and make it through these tough times for everybody. Even though fans and boxing Writers/Reports loved to bash certain promoters about low attendance...even low attendance was still extra money for these Promoters and Fighters

So once things get better God Willing...people will appreciate their "Small Attendance" even More now!

Fans need to lower expectations too during this time, fans still calling for these Big Fights to be made during this Pandemic and with no Crowd which is just beyond ridiculous and some fans want all of these fights for FREE
