First Sparring of 2010 - Need Criticism

Like the title says, this is the first sparring I had this year. Being in new england, the weather sucks but I'm just glad it's nice out this past week.

When we and my friends spar, we don't do headshot until we can afford some head gear. I am in the white shirt. In the video, my sparring partner is actually 5 lbs heavier than me even though it doesn't look it. I stood at 135lb and he was at 140. We are both using 16 oz gloves.

Please critique me. My stance, footwork, punches. Everything. I don't mind a verbal beatdown .

Yeah, everything needs work, join a gym.

It baffles me how some posters on this site think they can be boxers sparring with their friends. You aren't a boxer unless you train with a coach!!!

sorry OP but he's right. Unfortunately just throwing punches doesn't mean you're boxing. I could point out problems but I genuinely think its better if you just go to a gym and get a coach to help you.

..and please don't do that odd head movement thing anymore.

Everything that these dudes said, im not gonna critique hard just because you guys werent doin head shots so I cant say you left your hands down too much because you were only doing body shots, but honestly man, go to a gym and spar there, if youre going to spar with your buddies get some headgears or just dont use them and throw head shots, its only gonna toughen up your face and get you used to taking blows, and sparring without throwing head shots will cause you to pick up alot of bad habbits and does more to hurt you than help you... If you wanna spar, do it the right way! Also, I noticed that you stood still alot, you cant do that, I noticed your partner took advantage of it a few times and came inside with the body shots, it couldve been alot worse if you were throwing head shots and sparring with someone who's properly trained, you seem like a tall lengthy guy for 135 so you should use that to your advantage and keep moving the whole time, when you stand still at your height it becomes a disadvantage and the shorter stockier guy will try to knock you out, so definitely if you take anything ive said into consideration, make it that, and keep moving, keep it to your advantage as much as you can!

Are you deliberately leaving yourself open to be hit or is it just my imagination? You leaned over to one side often allowing him to land around the side. As said above, join a club, there alot more to boxing than trying to copy what you see on tv

It's very difficult to critique body sparring, but theres plenty of issues, it's not worth pointing out though so you can improve against a guy who can't box in the park. A coach would improve you tenfold in no time

I'm 5' 9" - 5' 10" . Been a while since I last measured but I am between there. Btw, I actually spared with headgear today. You guys are right, it was alot different. I've spar with headgear before but in the video, we just didn't want to go that direction. The guy I was sparring with in the video is not my main sparring partner but I will make it a habit to use them in the future.

I dont look like 135 and I get that alot. I think its my shoulder that make me look bigger than I am. I will definately work on moving more. I can see where my stillness could lead to disaster.

My main question is, being somewhat tall for my weight, should I focus more on jabs and straights rather than hooks? I suppose it's a good idea to work on all punches but I think you mean that I should use my reach to my advantage right? Thanks again for the advice.

Don't take this personal, but you shouldn't even be sparring yet. I know it's fun, but when you start getting hit for real it wont be and you'll quit.

If you wanna learn, train the right way and with a real trainer at a good gym and you'll learn that this sport can offer you something nothing else can.
