In my opinion, Chrono Cross > FF8,9,10,11,12,13

46 characters, about 30 were optional. Some took work to find, some required you to go slightly out of your way. Chrono Trigger is great but i'm one of the rares who prefers Cross. Trigger is a classic and a snes game way ahead of its time. Square used to **** all. You got a ps3?

The problems with CC (which was still a great game) were that it had too many characters (and thus none could really factor into the plot, they were just combat stand-ins) and the story itself was convoluted due to A. none of the original team working on the game and B. desperately trying to tie it to CT in some way. You know Magil was supposed to be Magus, but they cut out that angle due to "time constraints"? Who wouldn't sacrifice 15 random characters for them to hash out something more important? Incidentally you might want to check out Radical Dreamers, which CC is more or less a remake of/expansion on.

I haven't owned any console since Dreamcast except the DS Only the occasional PC game for me now, though I do have an itch to play fighting games recently and I occasionally go back and play old classics.

I'll be honest. Final Fantasy 8 is my personal favorite in terms of characters, atmosphere, locations, soundtrack, etc. It was my first Final Fantasy, so I won't deny there's a nostalgic factor within there.

However, as one of the posters said, most of the time it's nostalgia setting in when talking about classic games.

If we were to forget about graphics and consider the story and battle system alone, I'd say FF7 or FF6 overall might be best.

Final Fantasy 8 had too many "rescue Rinoa" moments and, once I started playing other FF games, I realized how tedious the Junctioning system was. You had to encounter enemies and stay there a long while drawing spells to boost your stats, and if you used those spells, your stats decreased. Leveling up also didn't help, because ALL monsters leveled up with you. I remember being in junior high beating Jumbo Cactuars at low levels so I could benefit from bonus stat boosting through levels. The game encourages you to blitz through the game, which is kinda weird. And once you get the Aura spell, ALL battles basically boil down to: one person using limit break with Aura spell, one person casting GF, one person standing by as medic...

FF7 had a good battle system, terrific soundtrack, and an intriguing story. It's a shame that there's such fanboyism with this one, though. "Swords R KEWL!"

If I had played FF6 during the SNES days, I'm sure I would've loved it even more, but I played it way after I became spoiled with graphics. But the story is a good one, too. The battle system's okay as well, and as always, terrific soundtrack.

Objectively speaking: It's probably Final Fantasy 6.
          Personally: It's Final Fantasy 8.

VI was the best for me. Characters like Sabin with his Street Fighter maneuvers and villains like Kefka are unforgettable. Kefka actually achieved his goal and destroyed the world. On top of which he acts like a psychotic nutjob.

If I had to rate the PS and PS2 versions it would be VII, XII, IX, X, and VIII. I just did not like the draw system of VIII. Not to mention Squall came off as too emotionless to me.

              Final Fantasy 8

materia system was worse than 8's junctioning system. In 7 all you really have to do is spam summoning materia.

I like the concept of 7. You know, slums, draining of the planet's life-force. etc etc. I just didn't like emo-ness of the game. Too much. In the beginning it was okay, then it just gets overwhelming towards the end. Cloud... really... how many origin stories are you going to have? really.

Now that I think of it 10 was pretty bad ass. I don't really appreciate it until I thought about the dark, gloominess of 7. FF10 was like a breath of fresh air. That one is boss too, regardless of Tidus being a crap character and Yuna being stereotypical "innocent jap girl".

                Final Fantasy VI.

VII was great but tends to get overrated by just about everyone because of how graphically groundbreaking it was. Still a great game though, def one of the best.

VIII I REALLY liked the story and characters but had issues with the junction system. There was almost no individuality, due to overlapping "branches" just about every character played the same once you got around max level!

IX I couldn't get into because of the characters. Zidane was lame and they tried too hard to try and instill the "nostalgia" factor into players. Gameplay-wise I guess it was okay.

X I really enjoyed. The characters weren't the best but the story was really heartfelt, especially the ending. I wish they didn't come out with X-2 though, they pretty much ruined everything they built with that sequel.

XI was an MMO so it doesn't really count, I spent wayyyy too much time on it for being such a horrible game.

I haven't played XII or XIII but I hear XII's battle system was groundbreaking, and XIII was pretty much a let down.
