I really hope he does not try and fit good players into a team but into the wrong positions. England have had a problem of being to narrow for ages really.. you had Beckham on the right who wouldn't run past a player, then say a J Cole who would come inside rather then go down the wing. I would be strongly against them putting Gerrard on the wing for the sake of it, play the best players for the position.

I dont think England can afford to play wide players and open up the pitch down the middle, they would get picked apart because their midfield is weak when its comes to dictating the game with their passing, plus i think tournament football has increasingly become about nullifying the opposition more than anything, also there are not many out and out winger left in world football so playing narrow can help negate the opposition even more, although i can see exactly what your saying. I think if you were to play Gerrard in his best position he would have to play behind a lone striker and that is not going to happen because Capello has said so, therefore he either plays wide or he gets benched, he cant play in the middle in a 4 man midfield because he is not tactically aware and gives the ball away too much, it needs must imo.

I wouldn't mind seeing Gerrard pushed forward near Rooney, they are close friends and in theory should play well together, some of Gerrard's best football for Liverpool was him up near Torres. They have had a couple of chances with it so far for England and it didn't set the world a light.. but then again Rooney was playing RM for Man United last season rather then Lone striker, so that's understandable.

Id agree but unfortunately Capello only want to go 4-4-2.

As Dynamite said Gerrard in a 4-4-2 formation as one of the main 2 midfielders is terrible, i really hope we don't see him alongside Lampard in a 4-4-2 ever again. I really hope we play 4-5-1 or 4-4-1-1, I'd personally like 2 strong defensive midfielders in the 5 man midfield. That way the likes of Cole, Johnson can do what they are really good at and attack more, along with the likes of Phillips/Lennon

Yeah that would be good, a solid defensive base to work off giving the pacey, flair players freedom to express themselves, dont think Capello will play 4-5-1 though

I dont like it but i myself think its true, sure a lot of those players play for top 4 teams but they are also surrounded by foreign players who just seem more adaptable and able to play more fluidly because of their superior technique, England players get pigeon holded from an early age imo and thats why i dont think 11 English men in the same team can be as effective changing system, i wish it were not teh case but everytime i see England chance system they fail big time, although Venables played 3-5-2 or something back in Euro 96 so it can be done.
