Yes. That imo is a ridiculous amount for rent. That is a mortgage.

A lot of rents today are same as mortgage payments. The down payment is just unobtainable for most.

The difference depends on how long you plan to stay
If you plan on moving every few years or so, renting will be cheaper and more convenient
The only advantage on buying a home is staying for a long time to build up the equity over the interest owed on the loan
Think of it as a car
Lease or buy
If you plan on changing cars every 3-4 years, you save money leasing
Buying is if you want to keep the car longer

Depends on the state/city.
I know ppl from Georgia and Michigan and other states, they have mansions for less than the rent for an apartment down here
