For the history buffs, which country is so shot and barely hanging on compared to their prime days? Is it Greece?

Considering Greece is generally accepted as the or one of the first places where democracy was installed into their society, Pythagoras was beyond his time, including others of their 'prime time', then the competency of their military, in ancient times they where pretty damn powerful. Then Italy, how vast and powerful the Roman Empire was. Then look at the two countries social issues and finances now, well past prime. Add on hundreds of thousands of immigrants hitting Italian and Greek shores, makes things worse moreso.
Wasn't Egypt a powerful place way way way back? It seems in a rutt today, they're past prime.
Spain is utterly in the shitter too, again, the Spanish Armada was something to behold (in them times) and they hit the South Americas, they got around and did okay.
But they're poor now, on top of that I believe there is some Eurozone fine they have, that is over 2,000 billion Euro's, the Catalonians want independence (further political restlessness and riots). Yeah Spain, Italy and Greece have fallen from massive heights over the centuries, way past prime.
Britain wants to be careful, we're not ***ed up, however we're a shadow of what we where.
The Middle East, hmmm 80%-90% of it is ***ed? And likely will be for a very very long time, that's America, Europe and Russia's proxy battleground, carving pieces for themselves, Game of Thrones style behind the scenes. The Wests playground....
America, too young a country (if you think about it compared to many many other countries ages compared to the date/year of the inception of the USA) thus, they probably haven't had enough time to hit their prime yet, they've internal issues to iron out first. And move forwards.
Considering how old China is you'd of thought they've hit and past their prime, but they're not even close to their potential, yet.
I'm happy I got that off my chest, been waiting to say all that a few weeks now, I was thinking of making a similar tread, good question OP! xxxLast edited by RightJab; 07-12-2016, 09:17 PM.

In terms of having the most influence in society and now almost nil? Then Iran/Iraq the old Persian Empire and Italy with the Roman Empire. The Roman Empire and the Persian Empires dominated the world during their respective primes, today the remnants are shadows of their once great influence.
