White House chief economic adviser Larry Kudlow indicated the Trump Administration may consider backing a “back to work bonus” as opposed to extending the $600 weekly unemployment benefit bonus currently in place as part of the CARES Act. The $600 weekly unemployment benefits are in addition to state unemployment benefits.
The ********s have proposed extending the unemployment benefit bonus as part of the HEROES Act, a mammoth $3 trillion proposal that includes another $1,200 stimulus check, more spending on unemployment benefits, small business benefits, additional Covid-19 testing, and much more.
The $3 trillion proposal far exceeds the largest stimulus package ever passed by the U.S., the CARES Act, and is unlikely to be passed in its current form. The **********-controlled Senate is set to vote on the HEROES Act when they return from the current break. However, it is likely there will be extensive cuts or modifications if the bill is to be passed.
In the meantime, the White House and other groups are continuing to explore other options. One such proposal, by Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH), would include paying a $450 weekly bonus to unemployed workers who return to work. This weekly bonus would be paid for a limited time and would be paid in addition to the worker’s wages.
In an interview with Fox News, Sen. Portman indicated the $600 weekly unemployment bonus is a disincentive for unemployed workers to return to work because many of them currently earn more while unemployed than while working.

I think it’s time to end that bonus unemployment.
