So I go to the basement of the fire house and dress for some fighting, or at least what I thought was fighting back then. I wrap my hands, loosen up and start doing my routine in the mirror. That's when, up the stairs, I heard the door to the gym open and close. The footsteps down the stairs were soft and gentleman like. So I keep working and watch for the person to appear at the bottom of the stairs out of the corner of my vision.
A man appears from the shadows of the stair way, just looking around with a huge smile on his face. He took in a few more views and then looked at me. "How are you kid"? He says as the huge smile again over took his face. "I'm good, how are you", I reply. "I'm doing just great kid. What are you doing here, what are you working on"? Being that I had only been there for a few months, I was working on my jab.
"So you think that you know how to throw a jab? He questions. "Show me...…". I'm thinking who is this guy, I've never seen him before. So I throw out a jab. His hands flail up as he reaches for my left wrist. "This thing has to be locked and ready to fire in an instant". He slightly moves my wrist perfectly in line with my fore arm. "That's where you want it, right like that".
He then takes my raised fist in his hand, "Now get in position". He says. I adjust my feet again wondering wtf this guy was doing. He raises my fist to the guard position, slightly in front of my tucked chin. He then pulls my fist towards him, slightly rotating it as it moved forward and ending with the knuckles parallel to the ground, right in front of his face. Again, he smiles.
"Now you try it". So I get in position and try to throw a really good jab. I look over at him and he is still smiling. "Again..." he says. So I fire another one. He steps forward with his hand cupping his chin. "That was good... but you gotta keep this down.." He gently touches my elbow. "Don't want to box like a flying chicken, now would we"? I laughed and replied No..". He was telling me to keep my elbow in while throwing the jab. "Gotta keep it all in line..."He holds up his left hand; in position with his elbow directly under his fist. "Do you see the straight up line it makes"? I shake my head in agreement.
"This is how it should be at all times, unless of course, you are using it to punch some guy in his face or you have to defend something". He smiled again pointing to my elbow and bringing it up to my fist. "Your elbow should be directly in the middle, in a straight line between your shoulder, your fist and his face when throwing a jab. And remember, we don't fly like chickens 'round here".
