One of his wife's was lawyer who was able, sometime in the mid-50s, to finally get the IRS to close down their claims against Louis.

- - It was is last wife if I recollect, and she kept him Liquid by squirreling out of bad contracts made without legal counsel. His promoters Aced his Boxing career, but totally failed his finances.

Yeah, eventually IRS seems to have not necessarily forgiven his ill begotten debt, but rather ignored it knowing how bad it was making them look. Never finished my Louis Bio, so maybe find the final answer there...later...
