How many fighters could make a legitimate claim to being the GOAT P4P

Just like the title reads. How many different fighters could you make a legitimate claim to being the pound for pound greatest of all time.
Not just YOUR p4p #1, but how many others could you make a legitimate, rational argument for.

As a rational adult I am capable of seeing various perspectives, and weighing the validity of them. And as such, I can see various arguments, variables, and measures that could be utilized to make cases for different fighters (even if I don't agree with them). For example: I'll make one for Floyd Mayweather Jr. Though I do not believe it, and I know it will rub some the wrong way, a rational argument can be made. Here it is:

Floyd Mayweather, was undefeated and following his victory over rival Manny Pacquiao proved clearly to be the greatest P4P fighter of the past 20 years. As we all know athleticism, thanks to modern training, is constantly improving; thus athletes today are better than those of yesteryear. Combining these two together it becomes clear that Floyd Mayweather Jr is the greatest P4P fighter of all time.

Now, do I believe that. No. Once again this is not supposed to be a FMJ kiss up post, and if you call me out as such I hope everyone here derides your lack of reading comprehension. Its just an example for how you can make a case even if you don't believe in it.

So, who else can you make an argument for? For some, like SRR & Greb we can just put their name, but I'd hope someone does put the case for them with it.

You make rational points. But my argument has always been could Mayweather hold up to the rigorous schedule of past fighters and still claim the top spot? If you say yes than we could probably argue Ray Leonard for that spot as well. For me personally, I think arguments can reasonably be made for Langford, Greb, Robinson, Armstrong and Charles. They are in fact my top 5 p4p fighters.

I agree with your premise on Leonard, and think a legitimate argument can be made in a few ways (one similar to the Mayweather argument being one of them).

I'd be interested in hearing your Charles argument. I'm a big Charles fan, but I'd like to read what you can say in defense of him being P4P GOAT.

        - -Enhanced Athletes ain't better.

99% melt like a spilt snowcone in summer if they grew up like Jim Thorpe. Less than 1% of the survivors could even approach his accomplishments.

They may not have been able to compete in his era, thats beside the point. Regardless, in measurable athletic competitions modern athletes perform better than those of a century gone by.

the winning time in the 100M dash for the 1920s olmypics was 10.8, over a full second slower than the time posted by Usain Bolt in 2012. Even accounting for synthetic tracks and improved equipment Bolts time is superior.

Whether or not you believe he is faster, a legitimate argument could be made that he is (the numbers are there for it). The same line of thinking then can be applied to FMJ. Once again, not arguing that its correct, just that an argument can be made.

To be honest as long as it's a reasonable talent I have no problem with most people's choices.

You have to be doing something crazy like claiming Luther McCarty was a great HW to get me to react to an assessment poorly.

I would argue against Floyd... though at 135 and below he was in that class. But he never fought a fellow ATG in their prime, and the Pac fight was not a wash...

I have to apologize for being a bit of a hypocrite... I have a hard time making these lists lol. I mean being a heavyweight is one thing... versus being a light weight, all different ways to accomplish greatness.

I mean the lists most people procure seem reasonable...

I think the argument lays with his competition and wins from middleweight to heavyweight and that many believe he was the finest light heavyweight to lace up a pair of gloves. As a technician he was smooth and powerful. Had the Sam Baroudi tragedy never happened this argument for him being the GOAT may have been a foregone conclusion. As it is, it is admittedly a difficult argument to make, but one I think can merit some consideration.
