Comments Thread For: Chavez Jr. Says He Felt Weak at The Weight, Couldn't Throw Shots

Alvarez (49-1-1, 34 KOs) used a punishing jab to take control early in the 12-round matchup of former middleweight champions. The bigger Chavez (50-3-1, 32 KOs) started bleeding from the nose in the third round. His left eye swelled in the sixth and started to close a round later.

    Two things:

    1. Sr should disown him
    2. Jr should hang himself

He just weighed in on the mark and turned up on time so he could get paid, which was a smart move. He didn't have to put up a fight to get that paycheck.

It was pretty obvious well before the opening bell that Jr wasn't gonna win a boxing match with Canelo
Yet, that was Nacho's game plan. Which leads me to believe Nacho knew Jr was overmatched and sent him out there to take as little punishment as possible and live to fight another day.

I doubt Jr had that mindset going in. I'm sure he came to win. But it was clear early he wasn't gonna outbox Canelo. And his only chance was to sellout and go for broke. But he got hit with something that let him to believe getting pot shot'd to an embarrassing decision loss was better than getting flattened. I honestly believe that if this fight happen pre-Fonfara, we see a different. Jr has always been an iron chinned, take two or three to land a big one. Once a fighter like that has his chin cracked the first time. Its often very tough for them to mentally throw caution to the wind the way they used to.

Well, we know Triple G won't feel weak or weight drained. He will definitely be throwing shots.

Kudos to Canelo for finally fighting a legitimate PPV foe since his fight with Cotto.

                Of course...

But he knew what he signed up for. It was obvious that he grew out of MW 4 years ago. He hadn't fought below 168 since 2012. He had troubles making weight at 168. There was nothing to suggest that he was somehow going to perform at 164.5. He looked like a zombie at the weigh in and fought like one.

Chavez was once a fun fighter to watch. When he had his hands ups charging forward, then he had a boxer stance, left hand down. Once he started doing that his fun fighting style ended and soon he did too.

Agreed. Memo and Nacho failed this time, big time. Chavez should be commended for the heart he showed to make it all 12 rounds, because Memo basically put him in the ring completely defenseless. His punches had no snap or power behind them. He had no stamina to throw combinations even when they were there to be thrown. He would have to rest 30 seconds just to throw one combination, then step back and circle away in order to rest his arms again. His eyes looked all red at the weigh in, and his lips looked dry and swollen. His gut was concave.

So people can talk about Chavez Jr's tactics, but there's nothing you can do when your opponent is full of speed, power, and energy, and is throwing bombs, while you're so depleted that your punches come out so slow and weak that your opponent can just walk through them and answer with a three-piece in the same amount of time it takes you to throw one punch. Chavez actually did find a lot of opportunities to land his nice left hook to the body, but it barely had any impact because he was so depleted. The shot had no explosion behind it like we're used to seeing. It looked like he was pushing his punches because they weren't snapping out like they're supposed to. Canelo was happy to sit along the ropes and let Chavez work because Chavez's punches had nothing on them this time, and he knew Chavez had no stamina this fight either so he knew Chavez wouldn't be able to sustain it.

Don't get me wrong, Canelo looked spectacular. His footwork is much better than it used to be. I saw him throw combinations while on the move, instead of needing to be planted. That's one of the things that used to separate GGG from Canelo, but it looks like Canelo is learning some of those things. He kept throwing this wicked left jab-hook from his off foot while moving that was similar to the left Kovalev landed against Agnew, that super athletic off balance left that still managed to knock down Agnew. That shot is an example of why Kovalev is special, and I haven't seen many fighters with power who are able to do that. But tonight Canelo was doing some really spectacular stuff like that.

So Canelo definitely looked great. But, showing snap at 164 is different than at 160, just like 160 is different than 155, just like Canelo's snap and stamina to chase Lara down all night at 155 was totally different than his snap and stamina at 152 against Floyd. Every pound matters at this level of boxing. This was a super middleweight fight not a middleweight fight, and Canelo looked great not having to drain himself to 155. But, we'll see if he looks as big, powerful, and fresh at 160. The point is, as good as Canelo looked, Chavez had nothing to work with from round one. His speed, energy, snap, and power were all left at the scales. I'm shocked he survived. The chin is as good as advertised, and his ability to at least partially deflect a lot of the shots with his hand defense was somewhat underrated. That might be the one thing he benefited from training with Nacho, but physically Memo and the nutritionists completely ****ed up and really gave Chavez zero chance to win this fight, and actually put him in danger because he had no power to defend himself with.
