Comments Thread For: Canelo-Kovalev Deal in Place Should Kovalev Win, Says Manager

Seems like Canelo wants this fight but GBP don't. For months now Canelo has said Kovalev is the fight he wants, but for months it's seemed like GBP has tried to sabotage those negotiations and then if that didn't work, convince Canelo of other options. Even to this day GBP is talking about how Kovalev is one option but they're negotiating with other people too. They want as many different fights to present to Canelo as possible hoping there's one Canelo will pick that isn't Kovalev. They just really don't seem to want the fight.
I don't get it. Kovalev is past prime. But then again I do it. Past prime or not, there's at least a chance he could win. Andrade doesnt have the power to hurt Canelo, so it's impossible for him to win. GBP seems like Floyd, they want guarantees that their cash cow will keep winning. No risk, not even like a real 25% chance of a loss, is acceptable to them.

There's unfinished business at 160. If he does Fight The Krusher I hope he Krushes that man

What do you want exactly, him to get credit for something he hasn't ever shown or demonstrated at all? If you want him to get credit for being an A or A+ fighter, an elite P4P great fighter, then next time he has an opportunity to fight a prime elite P4P fighter like GGG 5 years ago, you should tell him to take it this time instead of dropping the belt and waiting another 2 years until that guy looks so old and slow that even Canelo's own promoter Bernard Hopkins is on TV commentating saying "he looks like he has no snap on his punches no more" or whatever the exact quotes were from BHop when he commentated GGG-Brook for HBO.
Do you see what Im saying? Canelo-Kovalev is a good fight, but like GGG, Kovalev is no longer what he once was. Yes Kovalev is bigger, but if you think size in boxing makes anywhere near the same difference as age, you haven't watched the sport long enough. There are exceptions like Marquez, Floyd, BHop, Pacquiao recently, but if you pay attention, every single one of them come when fighters are not strictly drug tested if tested at all. Kovalev on the other hand does VADA testing. He also lives and trains in the US even though he's from Russia, which might make it difficult to get and use grade-A PEDs to beat drug tests, even standard low quality drug tests, even if Kovalev wanted to.
Whatever the reason, Kovalev is not like Floyd, BHop, Pacquiao, etc. At age 33 and 34, those guys could still box sharply for days and days. Kovalev on the other hand didn't just fatigue after only 3 or 4 rounds by that age, but he fatigued in such a way his punches lost all their sharpness and speed, and he could no longer take a punch.
If you really want Canelo to get credit as an all time great, there's one name you should remember, and that's Dmitry Bivol. If Canelo beats Dmitry Bivol at 175, Canelo will be unanimous P4P #1, he will be the fighter of this entire era, he will go down as one of the best of all time, he will go down as better historically than GGG, and I will never question his greatness again. No one will be able to question it. It will truly be Canelo's era. He would reach Pacquiao/Floyd type status. He would eclipse Andre Ward by miles.
But until then, or until he invents a time machine to go back and fight GGG in his prime 5 years ago, Canelo is getting as much credit as he deserves right now, and fighting an aging Kovalev won't make him an all time great. If he wins it will add another good win to his resume, maybe the best one yet, but it won't be the same as beating prime GGG would have been, or beating Bivol now would be.

I think Mall vs Canelo is a good fight. And I think Andrade is trash, but he gots a belt so yea throw him in line to. And I think Canelo vs BJS might be boring to a lot of fans, but I think that would be more competitive than most think.
And I'd love to see Canelo vs Benavidez when Canelo gets through all those guys at 160 in a couple years at 168. I don't envision Canelo seriously ever competing at 175. I think thats too big & this is just a vanity title he's looking to collect vs Kovalev.

they are gonna have some CW or a rehydration clause (or maybe both?) no way canelo fight kovalev at 175 just like that.

Full props to canelo for doing this.... that being said I got Kovalev, canelo never does good with guys with a good jab. Kov's got an active heavy jab and will be throwing big body shots canelo's way
