Punchers with a big chin generally are mentally bracing for taking shots to the chin (because it's usually the natural instinct for someone to go to the head), so going to the body (especially considering David might be really sweating down to 168) might leave him more susceptible to it. It was logical thing to do, I thought. Problem is David hits like he's got rocket launchers for arms and Boo Boo wasn't built for the grit. The fact that Plant was able to tough it out for 12 means the guy has balls.
All credit to Benavidez for that win but I still have an inkling Canelo beats him. Do I like Benavidez's chances more after Saturday's performance? Sure. But I'mma let a couple weeks for the recency bias to subside.
In the meantime, Canelo's got one more fighter to get by while Benavidez sits around or takes a warm-up before the inevitable showdown in September 2024 for the big one.
.................
Now that I think about it, I really hope they give someone willing to put up a fight this time against Canelo. I'd be willing to favor David only if Canelo struggles mightily against his next opponent or they feed him an absolute door mat. It would be extremely detrimental for your last two opponents to be Jermell Charlo (who took a page out of Joshua Clottey against Pacquiao and did jack) and then Jermall Charlo (only Jermall has a mental breakdown Oliver McCall style in the ring coming out to round 6) and Canelo is declared the winner by TKO.
You barely get challenged or hit in a year and then you go from those two fights to Benavidez...? Yikes.
It's probably like running 2 miles in the suburbs at a 1.5 incline with balmy 85 degree weather for a year and then signing up to do a 13.1 mile half marathon with multiple 6.5 inclines under the sunny 97 degree scorching sun.
It's a big change.
Having said all that...I gotta' give Canelo the benefit of the doubt. I still feel he can pull this off.
